National Marriage Week 2014: Take it to the Wall

By in Blog, Married

Does your life feel like a big yawn these days? Have you and your spouse dreamed of doing something big? Something special? Something different?

Well, then it’s time for you to get off the sofa and take it to wall.

Gather Your Dreams

A great way to get out of your rut is to plan an adventure together. And we have a simple way to do it. You’ll need some blank wall space, a few sheets of paper, some sticky notes and a roll of painter’s tape.

You’re about to dream on the wall.

Start with that special thing that makes both your eyes light up—the thing you never get around to doing. Write that dream on your first sheet of paper and tape it to the wall. Then use your remaining sheets of paper and sticky notes to list the questions you’ll have to answer and the things you’ll have to do to make your dream come true.

Give yourselves deadlines so that you answer each question, make every needed decision, and plot each next step without getting stuck. Use the wall like a flow chart, or transfer the details to a new Notebook of Dreams so that you keep up with all the “moving parts.”

If you work on this together bit by bit, your dream will soon become a real action plan.

Here’s an Example

I took a few sheets of paper and some sticky notes and taped them on the wall to give you an idea for your brainstorming process. Take a look:

This little exercise can help you two get your dreams out of your heads and into the open. You can also learn more about each other’s wants and needs. And this tool gives you a simple way to communicate effectively and work together toward a shared goal.

If you use a wall in a private part of your house, you can leave the exercise there for days or weeks for inspiration, and to remind you to keep making progress.

Go Forth and Conquer

As always, we’d love to hear about your ideas and experiences. If “plan” is a 4-letter word to you, leave a comment and we’ll post an article with practical planning steps. Meanwhile, please use the buttons below to share this post with your friends.

Enjoy taking it to the wall!
